Acquired Periodic Alternating Nystagmus

چکیده
대한신경과학회지 22권 5호 548 Periodic alternating nystagmus (PAN) is a rare type of spontaneous horizontal nystagmus, characterized by periodical reverse of direction with a transition period in between. PAN can occur in both congenital and acquired forms. We report a patient with acquired PAN associated with meningoencephalitis. To our knowledge, only a case of congenital PAN has been previously reported in Korea and our patient is the first case of acquired form. We were interested in describing and demonstrating the clinical features and videonystagmographic findings of this peculiar nystagmus.

The clinical and molecular genetic features of idiopathic infantile periodic alternating nystagmus.
Periodic alternating nystagmus consists of involuntary oscillations of the eyes with cyclical changes of nystagmus direction. It can occur during infancy (e.g. idiopathic infantile periodic alternating nystagmus) or later in life. Acquired forms are often associated with cerebellar dysfunction arising due to instability of the optokinetic-vestibular systems. Idiopathic infantile periodic altern...

An overview of possible treatment options for oculomotor disorders that prevent clear vision is given. Downbeat nystagmus, upbeat nystagmus, seesaw nystagmus, periodic alternating nystagmus, acquired pendular nystagmus, and saccadic oscillations such as opsoclonus/ocular flutter are discussed. In addition, superior oblique myokymia and vestibular paroxysmia are reviewed. All treatment recommend...

PURPOSE To quantify the spatial and temporal nature of congenital periodic alternating nystagmus (PAN) and to test the hypothesis that PAN results from a temporal shift in the null zone. METHODS Twenty-five subjects with oculocutaneous albinism (16 tyrosinase negative and 9 tyrosinase positive) and 7 with ocular albinism (5 x-linked and 2 autosomal recessive) participated in the study. Using ...

An 81-year-old man with retinitis pigmentosa had severe, slowly progressive visual loss that began at age 20. Intermittent nystagmus was observed for 1 decade. Examination revealed severe retinal atrophy and periodic alternating nystagmus (PAN) that occurred only in darkness (video on the Neurology® Web site at www.neurology.org). PAN refers to horizontal nystagmus that periodically reverses di...
متن کاملAnalysis of a case of periodic alternating nystagmus.
A patient is described in whom there was periodic deviation of the eyes in darkness associated with alternating nystagmus. An exactly similar situation occurs in normal man subjected to a pendular stimulus. It is proposed that in this patient there was alternating activity of the vestibular nuclei on either side of the brain-stem as a result of a removal of cerebellar inhibition, and that this ...
